Sights Common in Phuket but Uncommon to Rest of the World

The world is full of different culture, ethics as well as unusual things. Be it any part of the world, there are some of the other things which any tourist visiting the concerned land may surely find peculiar and funny and certainly not like his own country or place. Say for example, most European stares at Aussies when they walk barefooted. To be honest that is quite normal as they like the feel of sand and sea below their feet. Now take a similar example. Just last year, my friend who is from Australia visited Thailand’s paradise Phuket for a secluded and private holiday with his wife on the island. The reputation of the island is far reached as it draws visitors from all across the globe.

Enticed by the Island's beauty and reputation, he planned a romantic getaway there with his wife. He did everything perfectly starting from staying in a comfortable and luxurious one bedroom Phuket Villa (he did a lot of research on these villas fist and finally booked it from www.livephuket.com), enjoying every attractions of Phuket, beach candlelight dinner, bursting nightlife of Patong, various water activities for which the beaches of Phuket are famous for and feeling what is the real Thai culture. The luxury of the villa pleased as well as delighted him and what surprised him is some of the unusual things in Phuket which are very funny as well as unseen to him. Here are five such unusual things which contributed to making my friend’s journey in Phuket to be memorable.

  • Soft drinks served in Plastic bag

  • Phuket did find proper use of Plastic bags. These plastic bags are used for everything- absolutely everything even cups. My friend was pretty surprised when he got some iced soda with a straw in plastic bags. He remarkably told me that it is even convenient. Retail shops buy big bottles of soda and sell them in small plastic bags with a straw and a rubber band to carry it safely around.

  • Gasoline in Whisky Bottle

  • Gas stations are not easy to find but the people in Phuket found a new way to help and solve the problem. They sell gasoline in Whisky bottle. One fine day, my friend was chilling out with his wife in a bar along the street. He was surprised when he saw that drivers stopping by to purchase whisky bottles displayed on the table. Well that bottle is certainly not their drink but their cars as it is filled with gasoline. Handy but pretty uncommon.
  • Umbrella bike riding

  • Driving on road with a bike in Thailand is pretty easy, as easy as obtaining a motorcycle driving license in Thailand. In fact driver often drive the motorcycle with one hand as the other is busy holding an umbrella. I could not even imagine the sight when my friend told me - one person travelling on a motorcycle with no helmet on a wet road with one hand holding the umbrella against the wind and rain. I would simply freak out if I have to do that.
  • Recycled Tires Used for Garbage Bins

  • This is a pretty good idea. Thailand finds proper use of anything that is recycled. Most of the garbage bins kept on the side of the road is usually made up of old tires. Phuket Provincial Prison inmates strip these tires smartly and arrange them into neat trash bins with proper lids, handles and stands and they do last. THAT IS A PRETTY GOOD IDEA.

Well after hearing all these from my friend, I am confident that these unusual things will surely not surprise me when I am on vacation in Phuket. But there may be some other funny things waiting for me in Phuket as the island has a remarkable reputation for surprising its tourist and gifting them a memorable holiday.
